Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
Joshua Bloch is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He was formerly the chief Java architect at Google, a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems, and a senior systems designer at Transarc. He led the design and implementation of numerous Java platform features, including the JDK 5.0 language enhancements and the Java Collections Framework. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.S. in computer science from Columbia University.

Das Buch an sich ist fantastisch. Leider ist die Druckqualität ziemlich schlecht. An vielen Stellen ist der Text nicht richtig gedruckt und das Papier ist durchgeghend durchsichtig.
This book gives lots of insights into the dos and don'ts when programming Java. And yes, the author is not always fond of the ideas behind the way Java implements things. There clearly are reasons why other programming languages still win popularity over Java. Some things are very verbose (lots of boilerplate code), but it has been reduced in recent versions of Java. And some things can be done in some traditional way, which can sometimes be disadvantageous, so that with the help of this book you can improve your skills to leverage the improvements of current Java versions.I highly recommend this book for everybody who is still bound to develop with Java.
This is NOT a book for beginners to learn Java. This is a book about Java usage, as the author clearly underscores in the preface.Habitual Josh Bloch quality. Experienced engineers will find practices here they already use in everyday life. Younger engineers will find a real treasure trove here for making their software portable, maintainable and future-proof. A must-have for every Java programmer.
Ich kenne das Buch seit der ersten Ausgabe, es gehört meiner Ansicht nach zur Pflichtlektüre jedes Java-Entwicklers. Ich habe es mir jetzt hauptsächlich wegen der Neuerungen bis Java 9 gekauft und um es den Junior-Entwicklern empfehlen zu können.
A source of wisdom in times of confusion. I'd rather see each practice have an immutable chapter number, so you can easily throw them around in conversations, but for this new edition items are once more rearranged and renumbered (as was the case with second edition wrt the first). However there's a table at the end of the book, listing corresponding items in the previous edition. 12 new practices, one retired, adding up to 90 practices. Miraculously the new edition still is no thicker than its predecessor, which is due to the rather cheap print, i'm afraid. A bit blurry sometimes or vague. Unneccessary savings, I'd buy the book anyway. It's a classic.
Ich kann jedem Java-Entwickler, egal ob Einsteiger oder Fortgeschrittener, wärmstens dieses Buch empfehlen. Der Autor geht sehr gut auf beinahe alle wichtigen Bereiche ein und gibt Empfehlungen / Best Practices. Kaufen!
Must read für jeden Java Entwickler. Für erfahrene Entwickler keine wirklichen Neuerungen, aber viele interessante Sichtweisen, Details und Hintergrundinformationen. Für Einsteiger nicht geeignet.
Für fortgeschrittene Java Anwendet definitiv eine sehr gute Verständnisergänzung. Manche Themen könnten gerne auch noch vertieft werden, das Buch verweist in solchen Situationen dann allerdings immer auf zuverlässige Quellen.
