Schon lange habe ich kein Buch mehr so verschlungen. Es ist sehr spannend, anspruchsvoll, angenehm geschrieben und unterhaltsam. Mittels eines fiktiven Zusammentreffen von Breuer und Nietzsche erfährt man sehr viel über das Leben von Breuer, dem Mentor Sigmund Freuds, und der "ersten Psychotherapie" der Medizingeschichte, sowie über die gedankliche Entwicklung der Psychotherapie und ihre Vorwegnahme durch die klugen Köpfe der Vergangenheit sowie über Nietzsche, dessen seltsames Leben und Leiden dem Leser ebenfalls auf unterhaltsame Weise näher gebracht wird. Rückblickend durch die Augen des erfahrenen und belesenen Yalom scheint man die Geburt der Psychotherapie im Zeitraffer mitzuerleben.
The author, well-known one, is really treating a subject difficult, mixing history and the search for truth.. which truth? Where is it? This book is really a must to be seen for people who wants to deal with their own questioning.
Perhaps the general public will find this one a bit hard to digest, but any therapist can benefit from this. Anyone in therapy and wanting to use the time on the couch in the best way possible, will also enjoy this one. It's a clever book, and apart from teaching you a lot about therapy, it also evokes the spirit of the age in which it is set.
I never realized how wrong I was in what I thought I knew about Nietzsche. Fascinating, informative, entertaining, and thought provoking.
What a wonderful story. The characters are beautifully drawn. I couldn't put it down. Not only a very enjoyable, informative read but also made me really think about things in general.

Da ich von Amazon eine Einladung bekam diesen kürzlich eingekaufen Artikel zu bewerten, lege ich dann halt mal los, obwohl ich es nicht leicht finde, über dieses Buch überhaupt zu sprechen. Noch nie habe ich einen tieferen Roman gelesen als diesen. Er ist für mich einfach ein Meisterwerk. Mir fehlen die Worte.
Was, wenn Friedrich Nietzsche suizidgefährdet wäre und Lou Salome ihn in eine Behandlung mit Josef Breuer lockt, während der sich mit dem noch jungen Sigmund Freud berät? Das ist die Geschichte. In Realität ist dieses Treffen nie geschehen. Aber es hätte sein können. Und genau dieses 'was hätte sein können' beschreibt Irvin D. Yalom, selbst Psychoanaliytiker in diesem Roman. Ich habe den Roman auf Englisch bekommen, also habe ich ihn auf Englisch gelesen. Ich tue das viel zu selten, ich muss mich jedes Mal wieder ins englische fuchsen. Dazu kommt erstens eine Geschichte, die sich sehr langsam entwickelt und weniger handlungsbasiert als intellektuell ist. Und zweitens eine Geschichte, die mir zwar auf englisch erzählt wird, aber von deutschsprachigen Charakteren im Wien 1882 erzählt. Yalom bekräftigt dies, indem er immer wieder deutsche Worte einfließen lässt. And for desert, they had a piece of Strudel with Schlag.Das mag für englischsprachige Leser ja lustig sein, für mich als Deutschen wirkt das plump und schlecht gemacht. In meinen Ohren sprechen alle Figuren Englisch mit einem Arnold Schwarzenegger-Einschlag. Wird niemandem gerecht, konnte ich aber auch nicht abschalten. Ich musste mich durch zwei Drittel des Romanes kämpfen, bis ich meinen Gefallen gefunden habe. Und bis fast ganz ans Ende waren mir Breuer und Nietzsche unsympathisch. Der einzig Coole ist der junge Freud. Mit ihm hatte ich meinen Spaß. Nachdem ich durch war, war es doch eine ganz schöne und bertührende Geschichte, aber es war ein langer Weg dahin. Vielleicht wäre es in diesem Fall nicht nur einfacher, sondern auch besser gewesen, die Übersetzung zu lesen.
